National Consumer Fraud Week 2017
National Consumer Fraud Week (Fraud Week) is an annual awareness week run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). It provides an opportunity to raise public awareness of scam activity and equips us with the knowledge to identify scams and avoid falling victim.
This year’s campaign runs from 15–19 May 2017 and highlights the common scams targeting Australians through social media.
Scamwatch statistics show that last year reports of social networking scams grew by 79 per cent compared to the previous year, with losses totalling more than $9.5 million.
A huge $7.5 million of those losses came from dating and romance scams, with fake trader scams, and other buying and selling scams rounding out the three most reported categories.
