Credit card fraud warning for travellers and shoppers in Taiwan, Singapore and China
Credit card owners who have recently travelled in Singapore, Taiwan or China using their credit, or who have made online purchases from retailers in these regions should be wary of fraudulent transactions.
First noted in the past 7-10 days, victims have been charged 1150 Taiwanese dollars (approximately AU$42 + any local transaction fees) by a Taiwanese third-party payment processing company called “Neweb” or “Neweb Technologies Taiwan,” (or similar).
The fraud has primarily targeted people in Asian countries including Singapore, Taiwan and China, however, Australians have also been affected. Based on an evaluation of its affected customers here in Australia, local financial planning service Pocketbook (that raised the issue locally), suggests that thousands of Australians may also be affected.
If you have travelled in this region or made online purchases from this region in the past three months, you should check your bank transactions for any suspicious activity, including deductions of these amounts (NT$1150 or approximately AU$42) or references to “Neweb”.
In some cases victims may have been charged multiple times.
Singaporean media has reported that a number of local banks have moved to ban transactions from Neweb.
The Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS) has stated that there has been, “no breach of any systems within the banks.”
Australian banks are aware of the scam.
If you believe you may be affected you should contact your bank immediately.
You should continue to monitor your credit card account for any suspicious activity.
