Change your LinkedIn password following security alert
LinkedIn has reported a data breach potentially affecting more than 100 million members. Malicious individuals have reportedly stolen personal information of LinkedIn members including email addresses and passwords. If you have a LinkedIn account you are strongly advised to change your password immediately to help minimise your risk.
This latest report is part of a previously disclosed data breach in 2012 that is now much larger than originally thought, as the person responsible has reportedly posted 117 million LinkedIn member email addresses and passwords for sale on the internet.
Many people with LinkedIn profiles include personal information on their accounts that could be harvested to commit identify theft and other crimes.
LinkedIn has advised it is taking immediate steps to protect the passwords of the accounts that are known to be stolen. This includes invalidating all passwords of accounts that are compromised and advising all members to change their passwords as a matter of best practice.

Strong passwords are difficult to guess and should generally be:
- greater than 10 characters long (Noting that LinkedIn passwords must be longer than 6 characters)
- a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and other symbols.
Do not include:
- recognisable words or names, in any language
- repeated characters
- personal information
- anything you have previously used.
