Train your staff
Small business users face many of the same challenges as home users. The main difference is that an employee holds the entire business at risk when online whereas a home user is responsible only for themselves. In addition, businesses face broader risks which go to the heart of their business operations and reputation.
Developing a culture of security within your business is important in ensuring your staff adopt smart online practices.
What can you do?
- Put online security as a regular item on the agenda of your staff meetings.
- Encourage your staff to visit this website and utilise the security tips provided there. You may want to print out the 'top tips' and distribute these to all staff. They could act as timely reminders for staff to stay smart online.
- Use the opportunity with new staff to introduce online security as a part of their introduction to the business. For example, you may want to discuss the following online security issues:
- Using strong passwords and protecting them;
- Using email safely: e.g. avoiding hoax emails and phishing;
- What to do if business equipment is lost or stolen;
- Being aware of basic computer security; and
- Being aware of related business issues: data protection, employment law, contract law and protecting sensitive company information.
