Keep your software up to date

When software providers (also known as vendors) become aware of vulnerabilities in their products, they often issue an update to the software to fix the problem. These updates are also known as patches. Similar to the way fabric patches are used to repair holes in clothing, software patches repair holes in software.

What are the benefits of updating your software?

  • Protects against some unauthorised people trying to get in
  • Fixes bugs to make your software run better
  • Adds features

What can you do?

  • Some software providers offer the option for you to set your computer to automatically download and install updates as they become available. Be aware of this option when you are installing software.

If they are not available, check your software providers’ websites periodically for updates.
